What does the Muslim say and do when he wants to sleep ?

He dusts off his bed with his clothes (three times) and says:

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ.

In Your name my Lord, I lie down and I rise. If You should take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if You should return it, then protect it in the same way You do with Your righteous servants.

He holds his palms together, spits (a form of spitting mainly composed of air with little spittle) in them and recite:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ {قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ * اللهُ الصَّمَدُ * لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ * وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ}

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. {Say (O Muhammad) : "He is Allah, (the) One.* Allah-us-Samad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks).* He begets not, nor was He begotten.* And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him."}

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ {قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ * مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ * وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ * وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ * وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ}

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. {Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak,* From the evil of what He has created,* And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness ; (or the moon as it sets or goes away),* And from the evil of those who practise witchcraft when they blow in the knots,* And from the evil of the envier when he envies."}

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ {قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ * مَلِكِ النَّاسِ * إِلَهِ النَّاسِ * مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ * الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ * مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَ النَّاسِ}

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. {Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind,* The King of mankind,* The Ilah (God) of mankind,* From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one’s heart after one remembers Allah).* Who whispers in the breasts of mankind.* Of jinn and men."}

Then, he wipes over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then, the rest of the body (he would do this three times).

All praise is for Allah who has preserved and guarded me, all praise is for Allah who fed us and gave us drink, all praise is for Allah who has granted me some of His grace and blessing. O Allah, I ask You by Your Might to save me from the Hellfire.

O Allah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take its life, to You belong its life and death. If You should keep my soul alive, then protect it, and if You should take its life, then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to grant me good health.

أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ السَّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ: {اللهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِنْـدَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ وَلَا يَؤُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ}

I seek refuge in Allah, The All-hearing and The All-knowing, from Satan the accursed {Allah ! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists). Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission ? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.}

O Allah, I submit my soul unto You and I turn my face towards You, I entrust my affair unto You and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is no refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.
